The three bedroomed houses have been designed to achieve both the Passivhaus standard and level 5 of the Code for Sustainable Homes.

The homes are build using traditional cavity construction with 250mm Isover 3CWS 2 batts to achieve both low values and continuity of insulation. Air tightness to be achieved by parge plaster ,taped OSB and proprietary membrane and tapes. The triple glazed windows are both Passivhaus certified and secured by design.

Initial modelling in PHPP ( Passivhaus planning package) shows that the houses will have a heating demand of 15 kWh per m2/a and a heat load of 9W/m2

Bournville Village Trust

Green Box Associates has been commissioned by the Bourneville Village Trust and Bournville Architects to provide early design advice and assist in the Certification of 40 Extra Care flats which are part of a wider Care Village in the heart of Bournville.

A recent report by the Good Homes Alliance has identified that single aspect flats with communal heating are at high risk of over heating and that the elderly are more as risk of the effects of an over heated home.

Early work has been to modify designs to improve cross ventilation and to use planting, walkways and balconies to provide both over shading and amenity. Plans for a communal heating system have been modified to individual boilers to reduce the risk of overheating from internal hot water distribution pipes

Green box Associates have been asked to provide the following services:

  • PHPP modelling
  • Thermal bridge modelling
  • Sustainability and Energy Statement
  • On-site training and advice

The key features we will need to achieve Certified Passivhaus status are:

  • Specification of U values
  • Specification of Certified Passivhaus components
  • Control of overheating

Rachel Mitchell of Green Box Associates, worked with the  Passiv Collective on their award winning design for the Ravenscraig Innovation, Park sponsored by the BRE - developing the Code for Sustainable Homes strategy to achieve level 6, which complimented the Passivhaus design.

"The Passiv Collective, presented an elegant and thoroughly coherent architectural solution to the challenges of this former steelworks site. Their team managed to respond convincingly to every aspect of the Ravenscraig brief and the judges were unanimous in their praise for the quality of their submission. A genuine commitment to the task of alleviating fuel poverty and addressing wider socio-economic issues was evident in the teams motivation.
